Maharashtra juniors settle for silver

Pune, 28th July 2024: Fighting Hockey Maharashtra men and women signed off their day as runners up in the 2nd Hockey India Junior Men West Zone Championship 2024 at Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh), on Sunday.

In the finals, the men bowed to Hockey Madhya Pradesh 6-4, while the women suffered a 3-2 shoot defeat to Madhya Pradesh after playing out a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Maharashtra men did well to counter Madhya Pradesh and take a 3-1 lead after conceding a goal when Subhan Abid (11th) converted a penalty corner. Maharashtra struck back with a double by Arjun Hargude (17th, 21st) before Kartik Patare (22nd) made it 3-1 to end the first half.

Changing ends, Madhya Pradesh made it 3-3 with a double strike by Ritendra Singh (50th, 56th), while Anand Yadav (55th), Tushar Parmar (58th) and Viveka Pal (60th) took the score to 6-3 and out of reach of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra added another (4-6) when Santosh Birajdar (57th) converted a penalty stroke.

In the women’s final Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh shared two goals each with Chanu Khaidem Shileima (22st) and Palak Gupta (23rd) scoring off penalty corners. Maharashtra struck back through Jyuthika Bodkhe (40th) and a penalty corner by Z Laldintluangi (54th).

In the shoot out, Kajal, Chanu Sheilima, Huda Khan scored for Madhya Pradesh while Akansha Pal and Tanushree Kadu could only net two for Maharashtra after Maharashtra Sanika Mane, Khushi, Sukanya Dhaware missed their attempts.
