Pune, 30th August 2024: The much-awaited Pune-Lonavala third-fourth railway local line will be financed by the Maharashtra State Government, with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde having signed the proposal. This resolves the issue of local service on this route. The proposal to build the Pune-Lonavala route had been stalled for several years.

Initially, it was decided that Indian Railways would cover half of the cost, the Maharashtra State Government would cover 25 %, and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) would each cover 12.5 %. However, both PMC and PCMC refused to fund the project.

Following that, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the project would proceed with a partnership between the Central and Maharashtra State Governments. According to recent information, the Maharashtra Government will now cover half of the project’s cost, and Chief Minister Shinde has signed the proposal. This development is expected to reduce train congestion between Pune and Mumbai, providing relief to railway passengers.

Union Minister of State and Pune MP Muralidhar Mohol stated, “We have followed up to ensure the Pune-Lonavala third-fourth route project starts. The Maharashtra Government will cover half of the project’s cost, and I have spoken to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who signed the proposal two days ago.”
