Pune, 16th February 2023: The Maharashtra state government is considering the establishment of a new independent university for disabled (Divyang) students to promote their all-round development, according to Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil.

Speaking at a prize distribution ceremony for a state-level sports competition for disabled boys and girls, Patil noted that the government had already created a separate department for disabled welfare. The university, which would focus on disabled students’ needs and abilities, would further promote their development.

The three-day state-level sports competition for disabled students took place at the Balewadi Sports Complex, with Nagpur district winning the top position in three categories: deaf-mute, deaf-deaf, and multi-handicapped. Amravati won the blind category, Osmanabad won the physically challenged category, and Mumbai Suburban District took the title in the visually impaired category. Pune district was the runner-up in the blind, deaf-mute, deaf, and disabled category, while Latur district was the runner-up in the multi-disabled category.

Patil praised the competition for promoting the idea that disabled students are not inferior, which he said would help to increase their morale. The competition also inspired confidence in the students and promoted a positive attitude toward disabled people among society. Patil also noted that the competition could foster state-level players, who could eventually represent Maharashtra and India at the national level. The Leader of the Opposition, Ajit Pawar, added that future Paralympic competitions would be organised for disabled students.

The ceremony was attended by MP Supriya Sule, State Women Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar, former minister MLA Dattatraya Bharne, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Ayush Prasad, Commissioner of Disability Department Omprakash Deshmukh, President of Samarth Vyamya Mandal Pradeep Gartkar, Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Kadam, Regional Deputy Commissioner Balasaheb Solanki, and District Social Welfare Officer Praveen Korgantiwar, among others.
