Maharashtra: Free Net Meter from MSEDCL for Rooftop Solar Power Users Under Suryaghar Scheme

Mumbai, 23rd December 2024: Customers opting for rooftop solar power generation under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme will now receive free net meters from Mahavitaran or the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). The initiative aims to provide households with real-time data on solar electricity generation and consumption via a mobile app.
Lokesh Chandra, Chairman and Managing Director of MSEDCL, announced the decision, stating that the move follows instructions from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ensures free electricity for domestic users consuming up to 300 units per month and offers an opportunity to earn income by selling excess electricity. Customers installing solar projects up to 3 kW capacity also receive central government subsidies.
Previously, customers bore the cost of installing a separate net meter to track solar electricity generation, usage, and surplus sold to MSEDCL. Now, the free net meter initiative will not only save costs but also enable customers to monitor daily electricity data—generation, consumption, and surplus—on their mobile phones. This data will help households plan their electricity usage effectively, with the potential to eliminate their electricity bills entirely.
As of now, 3.23 lakh customers across Maharashtra have applied for the scheme, and all will benefit from MSEDCL’s free net meter provision. Since the scheme’s launch in February 2024, 83,074 customers have installed rooftop solar projects with a combined capacity of 315 MW. These projects have received Rs 647 crore in grants from the central government.
Customers interested in availing of the scheme can register online at www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in. MSEDCL, the scheme’s nodal agency in Maharashtra, has streamlined the process with a dedicated portal, making it entirely faceless and paperless—from registration to project approval and implementation. This digital-first approach has accelerated the scheme’s execution across the state.
