Pune, 7th October 2024: The Maharashtra transport infrastructure has been undergoing rapid development in recent years, and with the Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly Elections approaching, significant progress has been made for Pune’s citizens. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has invited bids to appoint a General Consultant (GC) for the High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) Metro, also known as the Ring Line Metro. This 36-kilometer project, with 44 stations, will encircle the entire Pune city, according to reports.

The Pune Ring Line Metro project is set to transform the city’s transport system, providing a much-needed boost to its infrastructure. On 4th October, MahaMetro issued a tender notice to appoint the GC for Phase 2 of the project. The GC will oversee consultancy services, including design, supervision, safety, quality control, and contract management. The contract, which will span five years, has an estimated cost of ₹2,40,00,000 crore.

According to reports, the first major contract of Phase 2—Package Consul-01—has been in the works since at least 2021. In September 2022, MahaMetro submitted a draft Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 2, prepared by the Urban Mass Transit Company, to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). This report detailed various routes totaling 82.5 kilometers.

Since then, the plans for Phase 2 have been revised. Two elevated extensions of the currently operational 14.665-kilometer Aqua Line—Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi—have been fast-tracked and incorporated into Phase 1A, also known as the Phase 1 Extension project.

In addition, Pune Metro recently invited tenders for the design and construction of underground stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj. These stations are part of the Swargate-Katraj extension of the Purple Line, which currently runs from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate.

The momentum continues as Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone for the Swargate-Katraj extension, marking another milestone for Pune’s metro expansion.
