Little Planet – A Tale of Frogs: A Cinematic Dive into the Hidden World of Western Ghats’ Amphibians

Bengaluru, 19th March 2025: The Western Ghats of Southern India, a region teeming with biodiversity, is home to many lesser-known but ecologically crucial species. Among them, frogs remain some of the most overlooked yet vital creatures in the wild. Shedding light on their fascinating world, acclaimed wildlife filmmaker Suhas Premkumar presents Little Planet – A Tale of Frogs, an insightful documentary exploring the lives of these amphibians during the monsoon season and their coexistence with humans.
A Forgotten World Amidst the Rains
Unlike the larger wildlife that often captures attention, frogs play a silent yet essential role in maintaining ecological balance. Little Planet begins its narrative with the onset of monsoons—the season that awakens these creatures from aestivation and brings them to life. As humans eagerly await the rains for relief from the scorching summer, frogs too prepare to thrive in their natural habitat. The film captures their hidden activities, secretive behaviors, and the dramatic shifts in their environment.
Common species featured in the documentary include the Malabar gliding frog, yellow bush frog, knob-handed bush frog, Indian bullfrog, Malabar tree toad, Amboli bush frog, Kumbara night frog, Jog night frog, Western tree frogs, golden-backed frogs, dancing frogs, common Indian toad, small cricket frog, and the narrow-mouthed frog. Through breathtaking visuals and intimate storytelling, Little Planet showcases their lifecycle and the critical role they play in the ecosystem.
The Vision Behind the Film
The driving force behind Little Planet is Suhas Premkumar, a renowned wildlife filmmaker known for his dedication to nature conservation. Having spent over a decade documenting the Western Ghats’ diverse ecosystems, Suhas combines his skills as a certified naturalist and eco-volunteer with his storytelling expertise to craft impactful narratives. His work has received recognition from National Geographic and has been instrumental in environmental education initiatives.
“It is difficult to conserve what we do not understand. Through Little Planet, we want to shift the focus to these tiny yet significant beings that are often ignored,” says Suhas Premkumar. “By showcasing their world, we hope to raise awareness about their importance in our ecosystem and inspire conservation efforts.”
The documentary is a result of nine years of relentless dedication, filmed under extreme conditions that tested the perseverance of Suhas and his team. Facing torrential rains, treacherous terrains, and persistent leeches, they managed to capture the untamed beauty of the monsoon and its impact on frog populations.
