Liquor Ban Across Pune During Ganeshotsav, District Collector Issues Order

Pune, 6th September 2024: Starting tomorrow, all of Maharashtra, including Pune, will be celebrating Ganeshotsav. To prevent this, the Maharashtra State Excise Department, Pune, has imposed a liquor ban in Pune District for specific days.

On 7th September, the first day of Ganeshotsav, known as Ganesh Chaturthi, a complete alcohol ban will be in effect across Pune District. Similarly, on Anant Chaturdashi, 17th September, there will be an alcohol ban throughout the district. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area will also enforce an alcohol ban on 18th September due to the Visarjan processions, which will continue until the processions end.

Additionally, on the 5th and 7th days of the festival, i.e., 11th and 13th September, areas where Visarjan takes place will experience a complete liquor ban. From 7th September until 18th September, until the Visarjan processions conclude, a complete liquor ban will be enforced in the Khadak, Vishrambaug, and Faraskhana Police Stations’ jurisdictions under the Pune City Police Commissionerate.

Pune District Collector Dr Suhas Diwase has issued orders to the Commissioners of Police of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, along with the Superintendent of Police of Pune Rural Police Force and the Commissioner and Divisional Deputy Commissioner of the Excise Department. Under Section 142(2) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act, 1949, these officials are empowered to close premises if there is an immediate risk of riot or unlawful assembly. They can direct such closures for as long as necessary.
