Pune, 5th June 2024: Certain myths are associated with hernia, let’s bust them with authentic facts. But, wait, let’s know what is hernia before busting any myths HERNIA – Defined as protrusion of viscus or part of a viscus through the wall that contains it.

1st MYTH: Hernia is a man’s condition Hernias are common in males but that doesn’t mean the fairer sex, women, can never develop a hernia in their lifetime. Inguinal hernias are more common in men whereas femoral hernias are mostly found in females. It is because men’s testicles create spaces in the abdominal muscle post-birth, making them more vulnerable to inguinal hernias, while femoral hernias are common in women due to a wider pelvis.

2nd MYTH: Do not lift anything heavy to prevent hernia A hernia can be caused by a variety of reasons. So, blaming everything on heavy-lifting is wrong. The weak muscles are solely responsible for hernia, so lifting a heavy object might put you at a risk of developing hernias. But, it is surely not the only reason as there are other causes like chronic coughing, sneezing, and long-term constipation.

3rd MYTH: You surely don’t need surgery for hernia Really? I can’t even believe this is a myth. I have news for you, the only permanent treatment for a hernia is getting hernia surgery. Nowadays, even minimally-invasive laparoscopic hernia repair surgeries are performed.

ADVANTAGES OF LAPAROSCOPIC HERNIA REPAIR
● Lower incidence of wound infection and hematoma formation.
● Lesser pain & discomfort. Immediate postoperative pain and delayed pain is reduced.
● Shorter hospital stay.
● Early resumption of normal daily activities and work.

4th MYTH: Hernia can be ignored Ignoring a hernia can cause the condition to worsen over time. When a hernia is ignored, it can become larger and more difficult to repair. This increases the risk of complications such as severe pain, vomiting, bleeding, obstruction of the intestine or even strangulation of the intestines. Strangulation occurs when part of your intestine becomes trapped in the hernia and cuts off its blood supply.
