Pune, 19th August 2024: Due to heavy rains in Pune yesterday, a ‘lake’ situation was seen in front of the entrance to Pune Railway Station. Passengers had difficulty finding their way inside as knee-deep water had accumulated outside the station. Additionally, the platforms were experiencing leakages, further compounding the issues. People faced significant challenges accessing the railway station yesterday.

For the past few years, Pune Railway Station has deteriorated significantly, especially during the monsoon. Due to the heavy rains over the last two days, a large amount of water has accumulated within the station premises. Furthermore, rainwater is leaking onto many platforms, making them slippery. Since railway stations are usually crowded, the slippery conditions increase the risk of accidents from people losing their balance and falling.

Many passengers have expressed their frustration on social media, sharing pictures and videos of the waterlogged station and highlighting the problems they are facing.

The railway administration, however, has attributed the water accumulation to the increased height of the outer road over the entrance. They have responded by stating that the issue has been noticed and that employees are taking corrective measures.

Vikas Deshpande, a member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee of Pune Division, said, “Rainwater is leaking on the platforms of Pune railway station. This has made them slippery and unsafe for passengers, especially children and senior citizens. The railway administration is ignoring the frequent demands of passengers for station repairs.”

Harsha Shaha, President of the Pune Railways Pravasi Group, said, “Proper measures have not been taken to drain rainwater at Pune railway station. This has caused a large accumulation of water throughout the station premises, including the entrance. It has become very difficult for passengers to enter the station with luggage. The railway administration needs to take better care of the passengers.”
