Kolkata, 16th August 2024: The rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has ignited widespread outrage and calls for justice across India. In a recent development, the victim’s father has refused to accept any compensation, stating it would dishonor his deceased daughter’s memory. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), currently handling the case, has assured the family that the accused will be arrested soon. Meanwhile, nationwide protests and a medical strike are ongoing in response to the tragedy.

The father of the victim has declined the offered compensation, asserting that accepting monetary relief would further distress his deceased daughter. “I have refused the compensation. If I accept money as compensation for my daughter’s death, it would bring more sorrow to her. I seek justice,” he said. His statement highlights the family’s focus on securing justice rather than financial restitution.

The CBI met with the victim’s family on Thursday, though the father chose not to disclose specific details of their conversation. However, he confirmed that the CBI assured them of the imminent arrest of the perpetrators.

In related developments, Kolkata police have arrested 19 individuals allegedly involved in violence and vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The police announced these arrests on social media, stating, “There have been 19 arrests so far in connection with the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College.”

Additionally, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide strike, with doctors halting services from 6 AM on 17th August until 6 AM on 18th August. This strike follows the tragic incident on 9th August and reflects the medical community’s demand for justice and accountability.
