Pune, 30th July 2024: Starting August 1, 2024, the Karnataka traffic police will enforce a strict new rule to curb road accidents. Any driver caught exceeding 130 kilometers per hour anywhere in the state will face severe penalties, including the filing of a First Information Report (FIR). This measure aims to reduce the high number of accidents caused by over-speeding, as announced by the state’s traffic police officials.

From the beginning of August, driving over 130 kilometers per hour in Karnataka will lead to the filing of an FIR against the driver. Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police for Traffic and Road Safety in Karnataka, emphasized that over-speeding is a major cause of serious accidents, attributing nearly 90% of such incidents to high speeds. On the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway alone, 155 drivers were found exceeding the speed limit on July 25, 2024.

In a recent report presented in Parliament by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, it was highlighted that in 2022, India witnessed 1.68 lakh road accident deaths, with approximately 1.20 lakh fatalities resulting from over-speeding. This alarming statistic underscores the necessity for stringent measures to enhance road safety.

Karnataka’s new rule is a significant step towards addressing this issue. By imposing strict penalties for speeding, the state aims to deter reckless driving and prevent accidents. Alok Kumar reiterated the importance of this initiative, stating that reducing over-speeding is crucial for improving road safety in Karnataka.

The upcoming enforcement is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the risks associated with high-speed driving. With the implementation of these measures, the Karnataka traffic police hope to see a marked decrease in road accidents and fatalities, ensuring safer travel for all road users in the state.
