Joint Operation by Military Intelligence and Pune City Police Nabs Fraudster in Army Recruitment Scam

Wanowrie, 26th September 2023: In a coordinated effort, officials from the Military Intelligence (MI) unit of the Army’s Southern Command and the Pune City Police have arrested a man accused of defrauding over 16 youths. The suspect allegedly took large sums of money, promising to help them secure jobs in the Indian Army.
An FIR has been registered at Wanowrie police station against the accused, identified as Ranjitkumar Rajendra Singh (34), a resident of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
According to the police, four youths have already paid him a total of Rs 12.8 lakhs through cash and online transactions. The details of the remaining 12 victims are currently under verification.
The scam unfolded between February and September of this year. The complainant, a 21-year-old from Sangli district, worked as a waiter at an Army establishment and was preparing for recruitment. Singh approached him at the Race Course ground, where the complainant used to run, and falsely identified himself as an official from Army Intelligence, claiming to be posted at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). He also showed him Army identity card.
Singh promised the complainant and his friends recruitment into the Army Ordnance Corps center in Secunderabad. “He initially took Rs 50,000 from each of us, promising to collect the remaining amount upon delivery of appointment letters. He provided the letters in May but became unresponsive afterward. We had paid him a total of Rs 12.8 lakhs. When we realized the scam, we approached Military Intelligence and filed a complaint,” said the complainant.
The police have charged Singh under sections 406, 420, 467, 468, 470, 471, and 171 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
