Pune, 6th July 2024: Reliance Jio, one of India’s leading telecom operators, has raised the prices of its tariff plans and discontinued several plans that included Over-the-Top (OTT) platform subscriptions. Effective July 3rd, the price hike affects monthly, three-month, and annual prepaid and postpaid plans, with increases ranging from 12% to 27%. The changes also see the removal of 14 out of 21 plans that offered subscriptions to platforms such as Amazon Prime and SonyLIV, significantly impacting customers who relied on these bundled services.

The decision to increase prices and discontinue specific OTT plans is part of Jio’s strategy to prioritize core data and calling services. The tariff adjustments and plan discontinuations have been implemented to balance rising operational costs and to streamline service offerings. “We are committed to providing the best possible core services to our customers, and these changes are necessary to maintain service quality and affordability,” said a Jio spokesperson.

Among the discontinued plans are the Rs 398 and Rs 1198 plans, which included premium subscriptions to JioTV, as well as the popular Rs 331 plan, which offered 40GB of data, 30 days of validity, and access to Disney+ Hotstar. Customers who previously enjoyed these plans will now need to look for alternative options or separate subscriptions for their OTT services.

The removal of these plans highlights Jio’s focus on its primary services amidst increasing competition and the need for sustainable business practices. The company’s recent price hike marks a significant shift in its strategy, aiming to optimize resources and enhance customer experience in its core service areas.

Earlier, Jio provided 21 plans with OTT platforms, but with the new changes, only seven such plans remain active. The restructuring is seen as a move to consolidate Jio’s offerings and ensure the sustainability of its primary data and calling services.
