Jio Fiber Connection Scam: Senior Citizen in Pune Falls Prey to Online Fraud, Loses Rs 5 Lakh
Dattawadi, 27th April 2023: A senior citizen from Pune fell prey to an online fraud, wherein he was promised a discounted rate for a Jio Fiber connection. The victim was sent an APK file via WhatsApp, which allowed the perpetrator to access his Net Banking user ID. As a result, the victim lost Rs 5 lakhs.
The Dattawadi Police Station’s cyber cell has arrested an accused from Haryana in connection with the case. Senior Police Inspector Abhay Mahajan confirmed the arrest and said that the accused was involved in the fraud.
The victim, a 60-year-old man living within the jurisdiction of Dattawadi Police Station, was offered a discounted Jio Fiber connection. He was then asked to fill an online form, and an apk file was sent to him on WhatsApp. The victim was asked to download the file, which allowed the perpetrator to access his user ID and password of the net banking account. The information was then misused, and the victim was cheated out of Rs 5 lakhs.
The action was taken under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Suhel Sharma, ACP Rajendra Galande and Senior Police Inspector Abhay Mahajan, Inspector (Crime) Vijay Khomene. The team included Akshay Sarvade, policemen Kashinath Kolekar, Jagdish Khedkar, Anup Pandit and Prasad Potdar.
