IRS Officer Becomes First To Change Gender And Name Officially

Pune, 10th July 2024: In a historic move, senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer M. Anusaya has officially changed her name and gender, becoming M. Anukathir Surya. This marks the first time in Indian Civil Service history that such a request has been approved. The Government of India granted the approval, making Surya’s transition from female to male official. This unprecedented decision reflects a significant step towards gender equality within government roles.

Anukathir Surya, formerly known as M. Anusaya, has made a remarkable impact on the Indian Civil Service. Serving as a Joint Commissioner in the Chief Commissioner’s Office of the Customs Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT) in Hyderabad, Surya’s career began in 2013. By 2018, Surya had been promoted to Deputy Commissioner and last year took on the role of Joint Commissioner in Hyderabad.

Surya’s educational background includes a graduation in Electronics and Communication from the Madras Institute of Technology in Chennai and a postgraduate diploma in Cyber Law and Cyber Forensics. In 2013, Surya submitted a petition to the Ministry of Finance to change her name and gender officially. The request to transition from Miss M. Anusaya to Mister M. Anukathir Surya was granted, marking a significant milestone.

Senior IRS officials have praised the government’s decision as a progressive step. They believe this move signifies a positive change towards gender equality in government jobs. The approval of Surya’s petition is seen as a beacon of hope for many and showcases the government’s commitment to inclusivity and equality.
