New Delhi, 1st July 2024: The Indian T20 World Cup-winning cricket team is currently stranded in Barbados (West Indies) due to the imminent threat posed by Hurricane Beryl. The team was scheduled to depart from Bridgetown on July 1, but the closure of Grantley Adams International Airport has disrupted their travel plans.

The airport closure comes as Hurricane Beryl intensifies to a Category 4 storm, expected to make landfall in Barbados within the next few hours, accompanied by continuous rainfall.

Team India is currently sheltered at the Hilton Hotel in Barbados, located near the coast and at risk of being hit by the hurricane, which is projected to reach Category 3 strength in the area. The storm is expected to impact Barbados between Sunday midnight and early Monday morning.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados announced the closure of Grantley Adams International Airport on Sunday night as a safety precaution. This measure has left the Indian team unable to proceed with their planned route, which included a flight to New York, a connecting flight to Dubai, and a final leg to India.

With the severe weather conditions and the airport closure, it is uncertain whether the Indian team will be able to leave Barbados as scheduled. If the storm’s impact persists, the team could be confined to Barbados for an additional 36 to 48 hours.

The situation at the Hilton Hotel, where the team is staying, is particularly concerning due to its proximity to the coast and the potential severity of the storm. The team is currently advised to remain indoors and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
