New Delhi, 9th July 2023: Indian Railways is set to introduce a unique tourist train that combines the allure of vintage steam engines with modern amenities. Dubbed the ‘T’ Train, this special heritage train will retain its old-world charm while incorporating the comfort of Vande Bharat and Vistadome coaches. Despite their appearance, these trains will be powered by electricity instead of steam.

The primary objective of the ‘T’ Train is to promote tourism and showcase the rich heritage of the Indian Railways, particularly in the Southern zone. The collaboration brings together the expertise of Southern Railway’s Perambur Carriage and Wagon Works, Avadi EMU Car Shed, and Trichy Golden Rock workshop.

The train features two modified MEMU-driving motor cars that resemble vintage steam locomotives. These replicas pay homage to the first indigenous steam locomotive, F734, which was built in 1895. Additionally, the train includes four self-generating air-conditioned Vistadome coaches in the middle of the rake. Three of these coaches serve as chair cars, while one functions as a restaurant car.

The Vistadome-type coaches, designed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), have been converted to provide a comfortable travel experience for passengers. The executive chair car can accommodate 48 passengers, featuring double seat arrangements similar to those in Vistadome and Vande Bharat coaches. Each seat is equipped with a reclining mechanism and a dedicated charging port. The windows of this coach offer a panoramic view, resembling those found in Vistadome coaches. The glass is reinforced with a protective layer to prevent breakage, and electrically operated automatic compartment sliding doors are installed in each coach. Furthermore, the train boasts an aesthetically designed luggage rack arrangement, while its exterior walls are adorned with theme-based vinyl wrapping to create a vintage ambience.

To enhance the luxury experience, the ‘T’ Train incorporates an air-conditioned restaurant with a dining-cum-pantry area, providing comfortable seating for 28 passengers. This dining facility aims to emulate the opulence of trains like the Maharaja. Recently, the train was displayed at Chennai Central railway station, where it was inspected by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on

Saturday.
