Indian Army Launches Flood Relief Operation in Response to Chennai Corporation’s Request

Pune/Chennai, 4th December 2023: The Indian Army swiftly responded to a critical plea for assistance of Greater Chennai Corporation. The request, received due to the flooding in Mugalivakkam and Manapakkam areas inundated by waterbodies such as Adyar River, Manapakkam Canal, Adambakkam Lake, Veerangal Odai, etc., required immediate intervention to rescue stranded residents.

Upon receiving the urgent request at 10 am the Army commenced its rescue and relief operations at 1100 hours, following necessary authorization from the Army headquarters. Responding to the distressing situation, two columns from Army Camp Pallavaram, operating under the Dakshin Bharat Area, promptly mobilized for the mission. The contingent, comprising Two officers, 06 JCOs, and 119 other ranks, of 12 MADRAS , under Dakshin Bharat Area came equipped with essential resources, including boats, flood relief stores, and vehicles, geared to navigate the inundated areas and provide aid.

As of the latest update, Cyclone Michaung hit Chennai and adjoining area, the relentless efforts of the Indian Army have successfully rescued and assisted 200 to 300 individuals by 2 pm, stated a press released from Pune-based Southern Command Headquarters of the Indian Army.
