Pune, 3rd June 2024: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderous weather with intermittent rainfall during the evenings until June 7, along with a reduction in the city’s daytime temperatures. With the monsoon expected to arrive in the next three to four days, daytime temperatures are likely to hover between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, the Shivajinagar and Lohegaon observatories recorded a temperature of 36.6°C each, which was 1.3°C above normal. Met officials attribute the expected drop in daytime temperatures to pre-monsoon conditions.

“Currently, the humidity level has increased in the city, leading to uncomfortable nights. However, after rainfall and a decrease in daytime temperatures, this scenario is expected to improve,” said a Met official.

Favorable conditions are developing for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon. Anupam Kashyapi, the former head of the forecast division of the IMD, Pune, explained, “Last year, the situation was different. The monsoon covered Kerala by June 8, but its subsequent progress was not impressive, reaching Maharashtra about ten days late and affecting the entire farming activity of the Kharif season. This year, its progress is on the right track.”

A senior IMD official stated, “The moisture level has increased across the state, and cloud development is underway. The impact of this weather phenomenon will become evident in the next two days.”

“The monsoon will first arrive in the coastal region of Konkan. According to our assessment, it will cover Maharashtra by June 6, one day ahead of schedule,” the official added.

Met officials also predict an enhancement of pre-monsoon activity in the next two days. “The chances of cloudy conditions and rainfall are very high in Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune district, over the next two to three days,” the official said.
