In 1999, India witnessed a horrifying face of terrorism, a memory that still sends shivers down the spine. The responsibility of saving several lives from terrorists outside the country’s borders was a daunting task. This incident, which marked one of the largest airplane hijackings in Indian history, is the central theme of Anubhav Sinha’s series, IC 814 The Kandahar Hijack.
What Was The 1999 Incident?
Before delving into more details about the series, let’s revisit the actual event of 1999. IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack tells the story of the time when an Indian Airlines plane was hijacked from Nepal. The terrorists took the plane from Kathmandu, first to Amritsar, then to Lahore, and finally to Kandahar, Afghanistan. They demanded the release of 35 terrorists in exchange for the 178 passengers. The hijacking began on December 24 and lasted for a week, involving five countries in total. The hijackers initially diverted the plane to Lahore for refueling, but after being denied landing permission, it was brought down in Amritsar. However, due to some complications, refueling could not take place there.
The hijackers then killed passenger Rupin Katyal and headed back to Lahore, where the plane was finally refueled. From there, it flew to Kabul, was diverted to Dubai, and eventually returned to Afghanistan. The terrorists demanded the release of 35 comrades, leading the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government to agree to release terrorists Maulana Masood Azhar, Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, and Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh. On December 31, the passengers were released and brought back to India on a special plane.

Vijay Varma will play the role of ‘Captain Sharan Dev.’ Patralekha will be seen as flight attendant Indrani. Dia Mirza will portray Shalini Chandra, the editor of Headlines India, while Arvind Swami will take on the role of DR Sivarama Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs. Other notable actors in the series include Naseeruddin Shah, Amrita Puri, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Pooja Gaur, Pankaj Kapur, Manoj Pahwa, Anupam Tripathi, Kanwaljit Singh, Aditya Srivastava, Sushant Singh, and Yashpal Sharma.
