Historic Test Win: India Beats Bangladesh, Ending 92-Year Wait for More Wins Than Losses

Chennai, 23rd September 2024: The Indian cricket team marked a historic milestone by defeating Bangladesh in the first Test of their two-match series in Chennai, ending a 92-year wait. India’s 280-run victory at Chepauk allowed them to surpass their total number of losses in Test matches for the first time. The team played its inaugural Test in 1932 under CK Naidu, suffering a 158-run defeat. Since then, India has never recorded more wins than losses in the longest format of the game.

This victory against Bangladesh was India’s 179th in Test cricket, bringing their loss tally to 178, from a total of 581 Test matches played.

India is now among a select group of teams with more wins than losses in Test cricket, alongside Australia, England, South Africa, and Pakistan.

In the match itself, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin delivered an impressive all-round performance, taking six wickets as India decisively defeated Bangladesh by 280 runs on the fourth day, leading the series 1-0.

Chasing a daunting target of 515, Bangladesh was bowled out for 234 in their second innings, with Ashwin claiming 6 for 88 at his home ground. Ravindra Jadeja contributed with 3 for 58.

Najmul Hossain Shanto was the top scorer for Bangladesh, making 82 runs off 127 balls. The visitors were at 158 for 4 when play was halted due to bad light on day three.

India declared their second innings at 287 for 4, bolstered by centuries from Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119), establishing an overall lead of 514 runs.
