Kolhapur/Miraj, 21st April 2025: The Kolhapur–Miraj railway line, a historic project initiated by Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, marked its 134th anniversary on April 21, 2025. Commemorative events were organised at both Kolhapur and Miraj railway stations to celebrate the occasion.
The line, inaugurated on April 21, 1891, was constructed in a span of 2 years and 352 days, beginning on May 3, 1888. It included 75 bridges and culverts, significantly enhancing connectivity and trade across southern Maharashtra.
Celebrations at Kolhapur Station featured a cake-cutting ceremony attended by railway officials, passengers, retired staff, and local dignitaries. Among those present were J. K. Pawar, Shivnath Biyani (ZRUCC Central Railway member), Kulkarni (Grahak Panchayat), and Nitin Patil.
At Miraj Station, the event also included a cake-cutting ceremony and saw participation from Ganesh Chivate (former ZRUCC member), Sharada Mali (Sangli Zilla Mahila Batch Gat secretary), and Yamuna Chikode (Sangli Zilla Mahila Batch Gat president), among others.
A portrait of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj was garlanded as attendees paid homage to his legacy. Senior citizens, retired railway personnel, and representatives of local organisations recalled the railway line’s role in regional development.
Speakers at both venues stressed the importance of preserving historical records, documents, and artifacts associated with the railway line’s legacy. Central Railway reiterated its commitment to maintaining heritage while enhancing passenger services and infrastructure.
