Pune, 27th July 2023 – In a grand celebration filled with fervor and pride, the iconic British-era building at Pune Railway Station commemorated its 98th anniversary on Thursday. The event was organized by the Railway Pravasi Group, drawing attention to the building’s significant contributions during India’s independence struggle and its deep-rooted historical significance in Pune.

The foundation stone for this architectural marvel was laid on July 27, 1925, under the meticulous guidance of the British Governor at that time, Leslie Orme Wilson. Renowned British architect James Beresford masterfully brought the grand vision to life, leaving behind a timeless masterpiece.

Stepping back in time, it was on this momentous day, nearly a century ago, that the British Governor Leslie Orme Wilson personally unveiled the structure, marking a historic moment for Pune and its railway heritage. The construction expenses back then were a staggering 5 lakh rupees, a testament to the opulence and grandeur that the British authorities bestowed upon it.

The commemorative event, held on Thursday, was graced by the presence of prominent personalities, including Station Director Madan Lal Meena, IRCTC’s Area Manager Gururaj Sona, and Station Manager Sunil Dhobale, along with the esteemed members of the Railway Pravasi Group, railway officials, employees, porters, and cleaning staff.

Addressing the gathering, Harsha Shah, President of the Railway Pravasi Group, emphasized the building’s cultural and heritage value and proudly declared its recognition as a UNESCO-designated global heritage site, adding another feather to Pune’s illustrious cap.
