Hinjawadi Police File Case Against Five for Allegedly Abetting Woman’s Suicide in Pune

Hinjawadi, 4th July 2013: In Pune, the Hinjawadi police have registered a case against five family members for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 28-year-old married woman in Bavdhan on 28th March 2013. The deceased, Ketaki Abhishek Sawant, resided in Bibwewadi. The case was filed by the victim’s brother, Ketan Suresh Marulkar (29), who lives in Hadapsar.

The accused include the victim’s husband, Abhishek Vijay Sawant (32), his mother Neela (51), father Vijay (59) from Bibwewadi, his sister Mansi Atlapare (31), and her husband Amrish (35) from Katraj. According to police reports, the accused allegedly subjected Ketaki to harassment over trivial matters, inflicted severe cruelty, and physically abused her on multiple occasions. They reportedly forced her into starvation as punishment for not meeting household expectations.

Tired of this continuous harassment, Ketaki ended her life on 28th March by hanging herself from a ceiling fan using a cloth. The suspects have been charged under sections 498A (cruelty by husband or his relatives), 306 (abetment of suicide), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
