Pune, 23rd September 2023: Heavy rains pummeled various areas in Pune on Saturday afternoon, causing extensive waterlogging and traffic jams. The situation was exacerbated by the Pune Municipal Corporation’s neglect in cleaning rain drain chambers, leading to hazardous conditions for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Neglected Drainage System
A large amount of garbage had accumulated on the nets of the rain drains due to the Municipal Corporation’s neglect. This led to water overflowing onto the roads instead of draining properly, causing hazardous conditions for drivers. Vehicles stalled as roads were submerged under one to two feet of water.

Infrastructure Woes
The crematorium at Karvenagar was flooded, prompting dewatering efforts by the Warje-Karvenagar Ward Office. The pedestrian subway at Dahanukar Colony Chowk also experienced water ingress, exposing the poor governance of the Municipal Corporation.

Traffic Disruptions
Heavy traffic jams were reported on Sinhagad Road for the second consecutive day. Water accumulation was observed at multiple locations, including P. L. Deshpande Udyan, the MSEDCL Office, Inamdar Chowk, Hingane Chowk, and Santosh Hal.

Municipal Response
Following the meteorological department’s prediction of continued heavy rains, the Municipal Corporation has deployed relief teams. Efforts to drain the waterlogged areas have commenced, according to official statements.

As the city grapples with the aftermath of the heavy rains, questions are being raised about the preparedness and efficiency of the Municipal Corporation in managing such crises.
