Heavy Rainfall Expected in Maharashtra from September 23 to 28
Pune, 20th September 2024: A low-pressure area is expected to form over the northern part of the Andaman Islands, which could lead to heavy rainfall across Maharashtra, including regions like Vidarbha and Marathwada, from September 23 to 28, 2024. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted significant showers as this weather system moves westward toward the state.
According to the IMD, the low-pressure area is anticipated to develop on Saturday, September 21, and gradually move toward Maharashtra. As a result, heavy rainfall is expected across Vidarbha, Marathwada, and adjoining areas, potentially impacting parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh as well. The intensity of the rainfall is likely to persist for almost a week.
Meteorologist Dr. S.D. Sanap informed that although the monsoon’s withdrawal was initially predicted to begin from South Rajasthan on Monday, September 23, this new low-pressure system is expected to hinder the retreat of the monsoon from central India, including Maharashtra. “The rainfall occurring during this period will be classified as part of the Southwest Monsoon,” Dr. Sanap explained.
In meteorological terms, the rain received during the monsoon’s withdrawal phase is often referred to as “return rains.” Despite expectations for the monsoon to begin its retreat, the environment remains unfavorable for its departure from the state, and next week’s showers are forecasted to be significant.
Scattered showers could also occur in various parts of Maharashtra as the low-pressure area moves inland. The IMD has urged citizens to stay informed and take necessary precautions, especially in regions prone to flooding.
