Pune, 28th June 2024: Heavy rains since late Thursday night have brought relief from humidity to residents of Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region) but have caused significant disruptions. The downpour has led to waterlogging on roads, massive traffic jams, and even impacted air travel. Six people were injured when part of the roof at Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed, leading to several flight cancellations. Many areas, including South Delhi, have experienced severe water accumulation, and the malfunctioning of drainage pumps has exacerbated the situation.

Since midnight, incessant rain has been reported across Delhi, causing major waterlogging at the Badarpur and Pul Prahladpur underpasses, halting vehicular movement. Due to malfunctioning pumps, traffic congestion has persisted in areas like MB Road, Pul Prahladpur, Badarpur Border, and Sarita Vihar. The situation has remained unchanged since 6 AM, causing major inconvenience to commuters.

In Rohini Sector-13, a large tree fell on KN Katju Road near Canara Apartments around 5:30 AM. Police quickly informed the Public Works Department and the Horticulture Department, and workers are currently clearing the tree from the road. “Traffic has been diverted in front of Tilak Nagar, with vehicles being redirected to the Outer Ring Road,” said a police spokesperson.

The Shahdara Assembly constituency faced severe waterlogging at the Vivek Vihar Phase 2 underpass, with water levels reaching up to 3.5 feet since 7 AM. Several buses, trucks, rickshaws, and three-wheelers were stranded, and even an auto-rickshaw driver abandoned his passenger.

Early Friday morning, heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, hit Delhi-NCR, causing further waterlogging and traffic disruptions. A significant incident at IGI Airport resulted in one death and eight injuries due to the roof collapse at Terminal 1. “Many flights have been canceled due to the incident,” said an airport official.

Authorities are working to clear waterlogged areas and restore normalcy. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on weather forecasts.
