Health Department Launches Campaign to Inspect Private Hospitals Across Maharashtra; Over 1,800 in Pune Included

Mumbai, 6th January 2025: The Maharashtra State Government’s Health Department has launched a special campaign to inspect private hospitals across the state. The Health Department has ordered the formation of district-level teams to conduct inspections. After the inspections, reports will be submitted to the Health Services Commissioner, who will then take appropriate action against non-compliant hospitals.
Dr. Nitin Ambadekar, Health Department director, has issued an order outlining the inspection process:
– Teams will check if private hospitals are following the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act of 2010 and other relevant rules.
– A list of non-compliant hospitals will be compiled within one month.
– Hospitals will be given one month to make necessary improvements.
– Re-inspections will be conducted after this period, with reports submitted to the Health Services Commissioner.
The initiative follows a recent review meeting in Pune, where Maharashtra Health Minister and Radhanagari MLA Prakash Abitkar addressed concerns about private hospitals not following rules or paying required fees to the health department. The responsibility for this campaign has been assigned to:
– District Surgeons of each District Hospital
– District Health Officers of the Zilla Parishads
– Medical Health Officers of the Municipal Corporations
A 2023 inspection revealed that major private and charitable hospitals in Pune were violating rules, resulting in notices being issued. However, no further action has been taken since then. The Health Department has not disclosed how many hospitals responded to these notices, citing a lack of manpower for re-inspections.
The inspections will focus on several areas, including:
1. Display of price lists in prominent areas
2. Operational biomedical waste disposal facilities
3. Possession of fire department no-objection certificates
Private Hospitals in Pune Region:
– Pune City: 850
– Pimpri-Chinchwad: 625
– Pune Rural: 350
This comprehensive inspection campaign aims to ensure compliance with health regulations and improve the overall quality of healthcare services provided by private hospitals in Maharashtra.
