Pune, 25th July 2024: Unprecedented heavy rains have led to widespread disruptions in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, including severe power supply issues and potential electrical hazards. In response to the escalating situation, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has implemented power shutdowns in several areas as a precautionary measure and issued a safety advisory to the public.

The intense rainfall has created conditions conducive to electrical accidents, with issues ranging from broken electric wires and malfunctioning street lights to damaged power poles and feeder pillars. The risk is heightened due to the conductivity of water, especially in the rainy season. MSEDCL urges residents to exercise extreme caution around electrical infrastructure, including iron poles, street lights, and household electrical systems.

“Due to the ongoing heavy rains, there is a significant risk of electrical accidents caused by various factors such as broken wires, fallen branches, and damp electrical equipment,” said an MSEDCL spokesperson. “We advise everyone to avoid touching or attempting to move any broken or hanging power lines and to ensure that their electrical systems remain dry.”

Residents are cautioned against letting electrical appliances or switchboards come into contact with moisture. If any equipment or wiring becomes wet, it should not be used until thoroughly inspected and dried. Additionally, homeowners are advised to keep television dishes or antennas away from power lines and avoid using electrical appliances on wet clothes.

The risk extends to buildings with iron sheet structures or iron staircases, which may become electrically conductive if insulation is damaged. “Ensure that the insulation of all electrical wiring is intact and conduct regular checks to prevent any potential current leakage,” the spokesperson added.

In many buildings, electricity meters located on the ground floor are susceptible to water damage during monsoon season. Water accumulation can lead to dangerous situations if it reaches the power meter. In such cases, residents should promptly contact MSEDCL to request a power shut-off to mitigate risks.

MSEDCL has also proactively shut off electricity in flood-affected and waterlogged areas to ensure safety. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with these measures and use the following channels for reporting electrical issues: MSEDCL’s toll-free numbers 1912, 1800-212-3435, and 1800-233-3435 are available 24/7, along with an online complaint facility through their website, [www.mahadiscom.in]
