Forty-two female students residing on the second floor were safely evacuated as the fire spread, Potphode said. “Our fire brigade team received an emergency call about the blaze in the building. Upon arrival, we discovered that the fire had started in an accounting academy on the ground floor,” explained Potphode.

By the time firefighters reached the scene, residents had already helped evacuate the students from the hostel, he noted.

While extinguishing the fire on the ground floor, the firefighters found a man in his early 40s who had suffered fatal burn injuries. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Sandip Singh Gill confirmed that the deceased was a watchman who had been inside a room on the ground floor. He was taken to Sassoon General Hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.
