Pune: Family of a 19-year-old boy, who had met with an accident and declared brain dead, gave new lease of life to three people, by donating his organs.

On 26th May, 19-year-old Aakash Kadam(name changed) met with an accident while riding his motorcycle without wearing a helmet. He was rushed to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital where he was admitted in emergency for immediate treatment. Brother to a young blind girl and only son of his parents, Aakash was declared brain dead the next day. The parents came to terms with the situation and expressed their willingness for organ donation. The procedure of organ retrieval was conducted by a team of doctors at Aditya Birla Memorial hospital. This noble gesture resulted in transplantation of one liver and two kidneys to three recipients with end stage liver and kidney diseases.

One of his Kidneys was donated to a patient at Aditya Birla Hospital where the renal transplant was done immediately. His liver was donated to a patient at Ruby Hall. His other Kidney was sent to a patient in Nashik. All three patients were suffering from end-stage liver and kidney disease and this organ donation helped in saving their lives.

According to Dr. Urvi Shukla, ICU Physician, “The process of declaring a patient brain dead to broaching the subject of organ donation with the family is a delicate one and fraught with emotions and uncertainties. The extreme grief of losing a near one and yet coming forward for the common cause of doing good for the humanity is a courageous act by the family. The society is gradually getting sensitized to the concept of brain stem death and organ donation.  She went on to add, that the deceased donor programme is becoming a reality because of such selfless people”.
