Delhi, 5th July 2024: Delhi University (DU) has postponed its final semester LLB exams scheduled for July 4 to July 18, sparking outrage among students and teachers. The decision, made by the administration due to low student attendance, aims to provide two weeks of remedial classes to ensure students meet the required attendance for exams. This sudden move has left many surprised and frustrated, with significant implications for students’ academic plans.

DU’s law exams for the second, fourth, and sixth semesters were canceled on July 3, just a day before they were to commence. Prof. Anju Vali Tikku, Head of the Law Department, stated that the exams were postponed following the Vice Chancellor’s orders. The administration cited low attendance as the reason, offering remedial classes to help students meet the minimum attendance requirements.

One student expressed astonishment, noting that typically, 200 to 300 students with low attendance face a year back and retake exams later. However, this is the first time remedial classes have been announced, impacting the future of nine thousand students for the sake of 250. The student also highlighted that those aiming for LLM admissions and those with foreign university offers will face significant disruptions. Canceled tickets and admission delays are among the anticipated issues.

The decision has led to widespread dissatisfaction. “This move sets a new precedent,” the student added, “and in the future, students with low attendance might regularly demand remedial classes.”

With exams now scheduled to begin on July 18 and run until August 9, the academic session will be affected. Initially, the exams were supposed to start on July 4 and end on July 18. This rescheduling has raised concerns about academic integrity and the administration’s decision-making process. Some students are considering legal action in response to the university’s abrupt changes.
