Pune, 7th December 2021: Drivers who have pending online fines for traffic offences will now have to pay ten times more fines instead of ‘those’ fines. As per the notification issued by the Maharashtra State Government, new penalties will also be imposed on pending e-challans.

Under this, if there is a pending penalty of five hundred rupees for driving without a license, five thousand rupees will have to be paid instead. This decision will be a huge financial blow to the citizens.

The state government recently issued a notification regarding the imposition of increased fines under the new Central Motor Vehicle Act. This notification only deals with compromise fees. Failure to wear a helmet will result in revocation of the license for three months with a fine of Rs 500.

The driver who blows the horn for no reason will also have his/her license revoked for three months. The penalty includes a fine of Rs 1,000 for tampering with a vehicle number or fancy number plate, reflectors or taillights. In addition, a fine of Rs 500 for the first offence and Rs 1,500 for the second offence has been provided for all offences.

Helmet fines have not increased but as per the notification issued by the state government, the fine has not been increased in the first case for not wearing a helmet. At present, a fine of Rs 500 is imposed and the license will be revoked for three months. However, if there is another offence of not wearing a helmet, the person concerned will have to pay Rs 1500.

The city has the highest number of pending fines for more than one offence. It mainly consists of a ‘helmet’ penalty. The person concerned is likely to have to pay five hundred rupees for the first offense of helmet and fifteen hundred rupees for each subsequent offence.

Action is being taken in Pune through e-challan from March 2017. Since then, more than Rs 150 crore fine has been levied on motorists. As a result, Pune residents who have such a large number of fines pending will have to pay a fine according to the new slabs, which is feared to be a few hundred crores of rupees.

Dr Avinash Dhakne, Commissioner of Transport, Maharashtra has said, “If you try to pay the old penalty of traffic violation pending in the name of the driver now, the concerned will have to pay the revised amount of penalty. Work is underway to update the e-challan system of traffic police in the state.”
