Pune, 1st April 2023: Vehicle inspections by RTO vehicle inspectors in Maharashtra will soon be automated, with the state government allocating Rs 60 crore to establish 23 automated inspection and certification centres. These centres will be operational by the end of March 2024, with one centre to be located in each RTO office. The Dive Ghat RTO in Pune will be the first to host this centre. Other locations include Tardeo, Thane, Kalyan, and Panvel in Mumbai.

Previously, commercial vehicles such as taxis, rickshaws, passenger buses, e-taxis, school buses, goods vehicles, and tempos were inspected and given fitness certificates by vehicle inspectors in RTO offices. These inspections checked if the vehicle was roadworthy and complied with safety and pollution regulations.

However, with automated inspections, human intervention will be minimized, and inspections will be based on 23 predefined criteria. Vehicles passing the inspections will be given certificates of suitability.

Sanjeev Bhor, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, said, “Automated Inspection and Certification Centers will be set up across the state, with Dive Ghat under Pune RTO being the first. Currently, such centres only exist in Nashik. The automated inspection process will replace vehicle inspectors.”

The Road Safety Fund will be used to distribute the allocated funds, and tenders have been issued for the establishment of these centres.
