Standing tall and commanding attention near the Southern Command Headquarters in Pune, a magnificent nine-foot bronze statue pays homage to India’s revered war hero, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Crafted with meticulous detail by sculptor Abhijit Dhondphale, this monumental piece, unveiled in 2009, stands as a testament to the indelible legacy of the country’s first Field Marshal.

Capturing the essence of Manekshaw’s valor, charisma, and unwavering resolve, the statue portrays not just a figure in bronze but a vibrant embodiment of the war general’s persona. Dhondphale, during the two-month clay modeling process, delved into Manekshaw’s literature and engaged with soldiers who served alongside him, striving to encapsulate his essence within the sculpture.

Of particular note are the statue’s eyes, luminous and striking, mirroring the resolute gaze that characterized Manekshaw. These remarkable features come alive, especially at night, adding a captivating dimension to the tribute.

Cyrus Dalal, a co-creator of this ₹20-lakh project alongside Dhondphale, emphasized their dedicated efforts to infuse life into the statue. Their aim was not merely to craft a representation in bronze but to create a compelling testament to Manekshaw’s vibrant personality and his profound impact on the nation.

Recently, the portrayal of this iconic figure came to life on screen in the biopic ‘Sam Bahadur’, featuring the exceptional performance of Vicky Kaushal. The film beautifully captures Manekshaw’s valor, quick wit, and resolute sense of purpose, further cementing his place in the annals of India’s military history.
