Ambala, 14th February 2024: The ‘Delhi Chalo’ protest by farmers, predominantly from Punjab, entered its second day with a unique twist as they flew kites to counter government drones dropping tear gas canisters. Tensions escalated at the Shambhu border near Ambala, where security personnel fired tear gas shells at the resolute protesters.

In a display of ingenuity, farmers used the long strings of kites to potentially entangle the rotors of drones, disrupting their operation and countering the tear gas deployment. The unconventional tactic showcased the determination of the farmers in their quest for a legal guarantee for the minimum support price (MSP) and various agricultural reforms.

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda appealed to the farmers for constructive dialogue, urging them to refrain from actions disrupting normal life. However, despite the deadlock between the Centre and farmer leaders, protesters gathered at the Shambhu border, ready to breach multi-layered barricades.

Confrontations intensified as Haryana security personnel deployed tear gas shells, prompting farmers to take precautions with water bottles, wet clothes, and protective gear. Prominent farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher criticized the government for prioritizing corporate interests over farmers’ demands and called for a positive atmosphere.

The farmers’ demands include a law guaranteeing an MSP for crops, the repeal of the Electricity Act 2020, compensation for farmers killed in Lakhimpur Kheri, and the withdrawal of cases against those involved in the movement. Clashes with Haryana Police resulted in injuries on both sides, with the police resorting to tear gas and water cannons. Despite challenges, the farmers remain steadfast in their pursuit of agricultural reforms and a fair MSP.
