Pune, 19th August 2024: Marvel Studios has made history as the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer Deadpool & Wolverine dethrones Joker to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in cinema history. Released on July 26, 2024, the film surpassed the $1 billion mark within just 23 days, grossing $1.086 billion globally. This marks a significant comeback for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which had been seeking major box-office success. The film’s massive scale, star power, and intense anticipation contributed to its record-breaking performance, toppling the 2019 hit Joker from the top spot.

Deadpool & Wolverine not only revived the Marvel franchise but also set a new benchmark for R-rated movies. Previously, Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, held the record with $1.079 billion in global earnings and had remained the highest-grossing R-rated film since 2019. The success of Deadpool & Wolverine highlights the growing popularity of R-rated content, with audiences embracing the film’s unique blend of humor, action, and mature themes.

Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, celebrated the film’s success with a note expressing gratitude to fans: “Thanks for making Marvel Studios’ first R-rated movie the biggest of all time. It’s fantastic to see that audiences are loving this movie as much as we all loved making it. All those conversations were worth it!”

However, Deadpool & Wolverine’s reign at the top may face a challenge soon, as Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to Joker, is set to release in October. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, the film has the potential to surpass the original’s earnings, making the race for the top spot an exciting one to watch. Marvel’s success with *Deadpool & Wolverine* marks a new chapter, but the competition in the R-rated genre is far from over.
