Data Alert: Pune’s Traffic Struggles Continue with 47 Lakh Vehicles and Counting

Pune, 30th December 2023: The city of Pune is witnessing a relentless surge in traffic congestion, despite ongoing efforts to construct new flyovers and roads to alleviate the issue. The growing dilemma is exacerbated by a substantial increase in the total number of vehicles, which reached a staggering 47 lakh by the end of November this year. Adding to the challenge, around three lakh new vehicles have been introduced in Pune in the current year.

According to data from the Regional Transport Office, Pune saw the registration of 2 lakh 90 thousand 793 vehicles by December 25 this year, marking a notable increase from the 2 lakh 54 thousand 551 vehicles registered last year—a rise of 36 thousand 242 vehicles. Among the new vehicles, two-wheelers dominated with 1 lakh 81 thousand 58 registrations, followed by 70 thousand 959 cars, 1 thousand 429 buses, 12 thousand 918 rickshaws, 12 thousand 925 goods vehicles, 8 thousand 395 passenger taxis, and 1 thousand 940 tractors.

Considering the overall vehicle count in Pune, it reached 47 lakh 2 thousand 182 at the end of November this year. The breakdown includes 34 lakh 51 thousand 765 two-wheelers, 8 lakh 40 thousand 709 cars, 45 thousand 787 passenger taxis, 1 lakh 3 thousand 821 rickshaws, 3 thousand 716 school buses, 39 thousand 91 goods trucks, 34 thousand 902 tractors, and other miscellaneous vehicles.

With the annual increase in the number of vehicles, the congestion on Pune’s roads is escalating, intensifying the challenge of traffic woes within the city. As authorities grapple with the surging vehicle numbers, finding sustainable solutions to mitigate traffic congestion remains a pressing concern.
