Pune, 5th August 2024: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited Pune today to assess the flood situation affecting various parts of the city. His visit included inspections of flood-affected areas in Juni Sangvi, Patil Estate, and Ekta Nagri. Shinde also reviewed the condition of Khadakwasla Dam, which had recently released water.

During a meeting at the Government Rest House, Shinde expressed concern over the severe flooding despite the controlled water release. “We need to understand why, after releasing 35,000 cusecs of water, citizens’ homes are still inundated,” Shinde said. He criticized the authorities for neglecting encroachments along the riverbeds, which may have exacerbated the flooding.

In Lavasa, Shinde sought clarification on damage to bungalows caused by the rains. Officials provided vague responses, stating that further information would be sent to the state government. Shinde expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of concrete answers and ordered an expedited report.

The meeting was attended by several key officials, including Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council Dr. Neelam Gorhe, Health Minister Dr. Tanaji Sawant, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Palakundwar, Pune District Collector Suhas Diwase, Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosle, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Municipal Commissioner of Pimpri-Chinchwad Shekhar Singh, Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey, and Irrigation Department officials.

Following the meeting, Shinde addressed the media, stating, “The constructions at Ekta Nagri were approved by the Gram Panchayat, and the blue flood line of the river has been properly marked. The rehabilitation of affected citizens is being carefully considered. We will revise construction rules for slum dwellers and enforce changes in the ‘UDPCR’.”

He further noted, “Our inspection revealed that the riverbed’s width has been reduced due to encroachments and embankments, diminishing the river’s carrying capacity and causing flooding. Orders have been given to remove these encroachments and roadblocks. Criminal cases will be filed against violators, and no leniency will be shown. A team comprising the Municipal Corporation, Irrigation Department, and Collector’s Office will work to increase the river’s capacity and prevent future encroachments.”

In addition, Shinde addressed political issues, stating that a petition against the Ladaki Bahin scheme had been rejected and affirmed that over one crore five lakh applications from women across the state had been approved. He emphasized the government’s commitment to public welfare.
