Central Government Includes Mucormycosis in Epidemic Diseases Act, New Rules Implemented!

Pune, 20th May 2021: The central government has acknowledged that the new disease, the myocardial infection has risen sharply along with the current outbreak of Covid in India. This is because the central government has included this disease in the Epidemic Diseases Act. A large number of patients with mucormycosis are being found in different states of the country.

Telangana and Rajasthan have already declared an epidemic of mucormycosis. Since then, the central government has also taken notice of the growing number of patients with mucormycosis, which has been included in the communicable diseases law. An official announcement was made by the central government on Wednesday.

Union Health Ministry’s Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal has given information in this regard. Accordingly, all government-private hospitals and medical colleges across the country will be required to comply with the regulations laid down in the Epidemic Diseases Act regarding mucormycosis.

The central government’s decision will now require the usage of regulations in the Epidemic Diseases Act to diagnose, treat and manage patients. In this regard, the central government has also appealed to the state governments to declare mucormycosis as pandemic at the state level. States like Telangana and Rajasthan have already declared this myocardial infarction as a pandemic.

Suspected and infected patients need to be informed! 

In this regard, Agarwal has instructed all the states in writing to manage mucormycosis under the Epidemic Diseases Act. “All of you are requested to include mucormycosis under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897. In this, all government and private hospitals, health care centres, and medical colleges will follow the guidelines. It will also follow the instructions given by the Union Ministry of Health, ICMR regarding patient examination, diagnosis and treatment management. In addition, district-wise statistics of suspected and infected patients with myocardial infarction should be provided to the health department. This will include the Chief Medical Officer of the district and the concerned agencies,” said a letter issued by the Ministry of Health.

What is myocardial infarction?

Mucormycosis is a fungal disease. This fungus is transmitted through the air. Those with a good immune system are not at risk, but patients with weakened immune systems are at greater risk.

The fungus enters the body through the nostrils. From there it grows into the sinuses. Some of the common symptoms of this disease are Black runny nose, runny nose, watery eyes, swollen eyes, and red eyes, loss of vision, unintentional tooth movement, and toothache. This fungus, which grows faster than cancer cells, also penetrates eye cells and the brain. Therefore, this infection is more dangerous than other fungal diseases.
