CBI Files First Chargesheet Against Sanjay Roy in RG Kar Hospital Murder Case
Kolkata, 7th October 2024: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted its initial chargesheet in the case involving RG Kar Hospital, accusing Sanjay Roy of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor. The chargesheet, filed in a Sialdah court in West Bengal, names Roy as the only accused, dismissing the possibility of a gang rape scenario.
As part of its investigation, the CBI has interviewed nearly 100 witnesses and conducted 12 polygraph examinations. Sanjay Roy, who was apprehended by Kolkata Police on August 10, one day after the incident, insists that he is being wrongfully accused. Nonetheless, the CBI considers him the main suspect in the case.
The 33-year-old was identified through CCTV footage from the hospital and was tracked down after his Bluetooth earphone was discovered near the victim’s body in a seminar room on the third floor of the emergency building. Authorities suspect the victim was gagged and suffered multiple injuries, including a broken thyroid cartilage caused by strangulation.
Roy was captured on surveillance entering the hospital around 4 a.m. on August 9 and leaving approximately 40 minutes later. His earphone was unaccounted for when he exited, although the device later reconnected to his cellphone. Forensic findings, such as blood and skin samples collected under the victim’s nails, have matched Roy’s DNA, further implicating him. The trainee doctor’s remains were found in the seminar hall on August 9, leading to the ongoing investigation, which has now resulted in formal charges against Roy.
