Bombay High Court Quashes Two FIRs Against Former Pune CP Rashmi Shukla In Alleged Phone-Tapping Case
Pune 8th Sept 2023: The Bombay High Court on Friday quashed two FIRs registered against the IPS officer Rashmi Shukla over allegation of illegal phone-tapping during her tenure as the chief of State Intelligence Department (SID) of the Maharashtra Police. Shukla was booked during the Maha Vikas Aghadi government period in the state and two different cases at Pune and Mumbai were registered against her.
The Pune Police earlier had filed a closure report in the case before the high court. The report is still pending before the magistrate court but the protest petition has not been filed in the case due to which the possibility of challenging the closure report has been ruled out. In another case registered against her with the Police, the state government has not granted a permission to prosecute Shukla.
It may be noted that the allegations were made against Rashmi Shukla by the leaders of Maha Vikas Aghadi goverment. It was alleged that Shukla illegally tapped phone calls of the senior political leaders including Congress state chief Nana Patole during her tenure as SID chief and leaked the data.
In her defence, Shukla had claimed that she was being targetted for disclosing the involvement of political leaders in the transfer and postings of the police officers in the state. The court had granted her protection from arrest in the case.
It may be noted that Rashmi Shukla is currently posted as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Dal (SSD) and she is the senior most IPS officer of the Maharashtra cadre after the current Director General of Police of the state who is set to retire in December this year. It is claimed that the present government is likely to appoint her the next DGP of Maharashtra after the current one retires.
