Pune, 12th October 2024: Bengaluru and Pune have secured places in the top ten of the world’s most congested cities, according to the 2023 TomTom Traffic Index. Bengaluru ranks sixth, with an average travel time of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to cover 10 kilometers, while Pune follows closely at seventh, where commuters spend an average of 27 minutes and 50 seconds for the same distance. This ranking highlights the severe traffic challenges these cities face due to population growth and inadequate road infrastructure.

The 2023 TomTom Traffic Index analyzed traffic conditions in 387 cities across the globe. It measures the average time taken to travel 10 kilometers in each city, providing insights into traffic congestion and its impact on travel time, speed, and overall quality of life.

In India, Bengaluru and Pune top the list of cities plagued by heavy traffic:

Bengaluru: With a congestion level of 63%, drivers in the city lose approximately 132 hours per year stuck in traffic. The average speed is just 18 km/h, reflecting significant delays in daily commutes.

Pune: Slightly better than Bengaluru, Pune records a congestion level of 57%, leading to a yearly time loss of around 128 hours. The average speed here is slightly higher at 19 km/h.

London, UK, holds the unenviable position as the world’s most congested city, where drivers spend an average of 37 minutes and 20 seconds to travel 10 kilometers. With a congestion level of 45%, commuters in London lose up to 148 hours a year, with an average speed of just 14 km/h.

The 2023 TomTom Traffic Index reveals that the average speed in many cities has marginally decreased, with congestion continuing to worsen in some areas. The study indicates that 82 cities have maintained their average speeds over time, but the growing traffic woes in cities like Bengaluru and Pune point to the need for improved road infrastructure and more efficient transport solutions.
