Mumbai, 1st August 2024: The BCCI is deeply saddened by the death of former Indian cricketer and coach Anshuman Gaekwad, who passed away on Wednesday after a prolonged battle with blood cancer.

Gaekwad’s international cricket career extended over a decade, during which he played 40 Test matches and 15 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for India. Following his retirement, he served as the head coach of the Indian team from 1997, guiding them to significant achievements, including a victory in the 1998 tri-nation tournament in Sharjah and witnessing Anil Kumble’s historic 10-wicket haul against Pakistan in New Delhi in 1999.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah expressed his condolences, stating, “The loss of Anshuman Gaekwad is a tremendous blow to the cricketing world. His dedication, courage, and wisdom have left an indelible mark on Indian cricket. We mourn his passing and extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends.”

Renowned for his solid technique and resilience, Gaekwad is celebrated for his gritty performances, such as his defiant 81 against West Indies in Jamaica in 1976 and his enduring 201 against Pakistan in Jalandhar in 1983. His domestic career was equally impressive, with over 12,000 runs from more than 200 first-class matches, including 34 centuries and 47 half-centuries.

Gaekwad also held various roles beyond playing, including serving as a national selector, a member of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, an Apex Council Member, a President of the Indian Cricketers’ Association, and a commentator and TV expert. In 2018, he was honoured with the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.

BCCI President Roger Binny remarked, “Anshuman Gaekwad’s passing is a profound loss for Indian cricket. His unwavering commitment and passion for the sport were truly exceptional. He was not only a cricketer but also a mentor and friend to many. His legacy will endure, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this challenging time.”
