Dhaka, 5th August 2024: Protests in Bangladesh have escalated dramatically as demonstrators stormed and looted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s residence, Ganabhaban. Images of the chaos are spreading rapidly on social media, showing scenes of theft and disorder within the Prime Minister’s home. Looters were seen taking computers, large boxes, ducks, tea cups, saris, and paintings. Some individuals even appeared to be lounging and having meals inside the residence.

Following her departure from Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina arrived at Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad, India, where she was met by India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. During their meeting, they discussed the unfolding situation in Bangladesh and possible future actions. The Indian Air Force has heightened its readiness in the eastern sector as a precautionary measure.

Sheikh Hasina’s arrival in India was facilitated by a C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft. To ensure her safety, the Indian Air Force has been deployed for her protection. Additionally, security has been bolstered outside the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi. On Monday evening, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh.

In a further escalation, protesters in Bangladesh set fire to multiple locations shortly after Sheikh Hasina’s departure. According to the Bangladesh newspapers, demonstrators torched the Awami League’s Dhaka district office and the office of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina located at 3/A Dhanmondi in Dhaka. The violent actions underscore the intense unrest gripping the nation.

The situation remains fluid as both Bangladesh and India navigate the rapidly evolving crisis.
