Ban on Firearms and Weapons Imposed in Pune District Until 25th November

Pune, 16th October 2024: The Code of Conduct for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections has commenced. To ensure that the elections in the Pune District are conducted peacefully and orderly, Pune District Collector Dr Suhas Diwase has issued an order to prevent the use of arms, ammunition, and weapons, thereby safeguarding human life, public safety, property, and peace.

Following the powers conferred under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) of 2023 and the Arms Act of 1959, the carrying of licensed firearms, weapons, and ammunition is prohibited for any person in the Pune District until 24:00 hrs i.e midnight on 25th November 2024. This order excludes officers and employees responsible for arrangements and security personnel assigned to safeguard banks and public property.

It is the responsibility of the concerned banks, institutions, and officials to ensure that weapons are not misused during the election period. The order also specifies that individuals who violate this directive will face action under Section 223 (disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita of 2023.
