Colombo, 12th September 2023: In an intense Super 4 stage showdown during the Asia Cup between India and Sri Lanka, India encountered a formidable test posed by the Sri Lankan spinners Dunith Wellalage and Charith Asalanka. The contest unfolded at Colombo’s R. Premadasa International Stadium, with India winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Fresh off a rain-interrupted showdown against Pakistan a mere day prior, India confronted the formidable challenge of an unrelenting fixture list. Despite India’s historical struggles against pace and especially left-handed pacers, it was the spinners who emerged as the dominant threat on this occasion.

Dunith Wellalage shone brightly as Sri Lanka’s standout performer, amassing an impressive 5-wicket haul in his 10 overs, while giving away just 40 runs. Charith Asalanka played a pivotal role as well, securing 4 crucial wickets in his 9 overs, and conceding a mere 18 runs.

India’s skipper and opening batsman, Rohit Sharma, displayed a composed performance, accumulating 53 runs from 48 balls before succumbing to Wellalage’s delivery. However, the other opener, Shubman Gill, faced a challenging outing, recording just 19 runs from 25 deliveries before falling to Wellalage once again. Virat Kohli, who had previously excelled against Pakistan, managed only 3 runs from 12 balls before being caught by Dasun Shanaka off a delivery by Wellalage.

Ishan Kishan, appearing to be in good form, compiled 33 runs from 61 deliveries but was ultimately dismissed by Asalanka, with Wellalage completing the catch. KL Rahul added 39 runs to the scoreboard from 44 balls before being caught and bowled by Dunith Wellalage. The rest of India’s middle-order and lower-order, featuring Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav, faced difficulties and departed with only a few runs to their names.

Despite India’s apparent readiness to face top Sri Lankan bowlers like spinner Maheesh Theekshana and pacer Mathisha Pathirana, they were caught off guard by the exceptional displays from Wellalage and Asalanka.

Play was halted due to rain with India standing at a precarious 197 for 9 in 47 overs. At the break, Axar Patel was unbeaten at 15 runs from 29 deliveries, while Mohammed Siraj remained at the crease with an unbeaten score of 2 runs off 13 balls. Following the resumption of play, India succeeded in establishing a target of 214 runs for Sri Lanka. They were eventually all out in 49.1 overs. Axar Patel made a valuable contribution of 26 runs from 36 deliveries before being dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana’s delivery, caught by Sadeera Samarawickrama.

In the second innings, it became clear that both sides encountered difficulties with their batting, with spinners asserting their dominance over the game. Kuldeep Yadav particularly stood out with the ball, claiming 4 crucial wickets in his 9 overs while conceding just 43 runs. Ravindra Jadeja also made a significant impact, securing 2 wickets during his 10 overs and yielding a mere 33 runs. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Hardik Pandya also made valuable contributions by taking wickets.

Sri Lanka’s batting struggles persisted as Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, and other key players failed to produce substantial contributions. Charith Asalanka, who had previously excelled with the ball, managed to add 22 runs to the scoreboard before being caught by KL Rahul on a delivery by Kuldeep Yadav. Dhananjay de Silva, captain Dasun Shanaka, and Dunith Wellalage also found themselves succumbing to India’s spinners.

Wellalage displayed notable resistance, amassing an unbeaten 42 runs from 46 balls. Nevertheless, Sri Lanka’s lower order faced a collapse, preventing them from reaching the target, and they fell short by 41 runs. India secured a comfortable victory, sealing their place in the final of the Asia Cup 2023.

Regarding Pakistan and Sri Lanka, they are now set for a virtual semifinal clash in just two days, where the victor will secure a coveted spot in the final, while the defeated team will exit the tournament. The Asia Cup’s riveting drama continues to unfold, ensuring cricket enthusiasts remain on the edge of their seats.
