Pune, 2 April 2021: The Maharashtra State Government has now decided to give LPG connection to 421 schools in the Pune district. The mid-day meal at these 421 schools was still cooked on chulha until recently.

In urban areas, the mid-day meal is cooked in a central kitchen and then distributed to schools. However, in rural areas, the meals are cooked at the schools. Since several rural schools don’t have a gas connection, the meals are usually cooked on chulha.

In order to free the schools from the smoke coming from the chulha and prevent air pollution, the government has now decided to provide an LPG connection to schools.

Out of the 4,416 schools in the Pune district, 421 schools in Ambagaon (18), Bhor (12), Daund (1), Haveli (18), Indapur (3), Junnar (27), Khed (27), Maval (169), Mulshi (3), Purandar (37) and Velha (44) do not have LPG connection as of yet. With these, 100 percent of schools in the Pune district will now be free of chulha.

Last December, the State Education Director (Primary) had asked for a report on gas connections at schools from the Zilla Parishad primary education officers of all districts. The reports had revealed that several schools in the state did not have LPG connections.
