Pune, 28th May 2023: Opposition Leader Ajit Pawar has called for stricter actions against hill encroachments and environmental damage in Pune. Speaking at the release of the investigative book ‘Ambil Odha – Babbling Brook to Nasty Drain’, Pawar emphasized the need to revoke the voting rights of encroachers and individuals involved in misconduct.

He believes that this measure, supported by political consensus, can help prevent the collapse of urban planning and protect the environment.

The event, attended by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials and researchers, shed light on the unscientific practices and poor planning that have plagued development projects in Pune. Pawar expressed concern about the detrimental impact such practices have had on the city and its residents, urging officials and politicians to listen to expert advice and avoid further hardships.

The book, authored by Srikant Gabale and Manjushree Parasnis, focuses on the Ambil stream and its transformation from a bubbling spring to a polluted drain. It delves into the rules governing natural flow and addresses related environmental issues. The authors propose scientific measures for stream improvement, aiming to provide valuable guidance to the administration.

Acknowledging the significance of the book, Municipal Corporation Additional Commissioner Kunal Khemnar pledged to explore the implementation of the suggested measures. He emphasized the Corporation’s commitment to leveraging the book’s insights to enhance environmental conservation efforts in Pune.

The publication highlights the urgent need for systematic interventions to restore the Ambil stream and mitigate environmental degradation. It serves as a wake-up call to stakeholders, urging them to prioritize sustainable development practices and protect Pune’s natural beauty.
