Mumbai-Pune Expressway To Get Intelligent Traffic Management System Soon To Ensure Safe Travel
Mumbai, 12th September 2021: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will activate an ‘Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to control the undisciplined traffic, curb the rising number of accidents and ensure safe travel for motorists. The tender process will be completed within a month.
The project to operate the state-of-the-art system was stalled for two years due to financial constraints. But now that Rs 40 crore will soon be available from the state government, the two-year-long tender for the implementation of ITMA will be finalized within a month.
Approximately 60,000 vehicles pass through the 94 km Mumbai-Pune expressway daily. Accidents on the expressway have been on the rise in the last few years due to non-compliance of drivers with traffic rules.
The state-of-the-art system will be operational on a public-private partnership basis at an estimated cost of Rs 160 crore. Accordingly, CCTV cameras will be installed along the entire route and an average speed detection system will be installed at 39 places. A ‘Lane Discipline Violation Detection System’ will be set up at 34 places to detect traffic violators.
“If the ITMS system is operational, vehicles violating speed rules and traffic rules will be detected and stopped at the nearest toll plaza and penalty will be levied on the vehicle. In case of an accident, immediate assistance will be provided at the spot. Three tenders have been submitted for it, and one of them will be finalized and the company will be appointed. After that, the actual work of installing the system will start in six months by carrying out the next process. The work will be completed within six months from the commencement of the work”, said Anil Kumar Gaikwad, Joint Managing Director, MSRDC.
